Never buy a Phillips DVD/VCR combo unit!
I got one last X-Mas and it dies after 10 hours use. So last week I get up at 6am to shop--which I hate doing for a post T-Day sale.
I buy a DVD player for $19.99
Next day, I bring back a DVD player for $19.99 and buy a Toshiba unit for much more.
I pop in Blue Note Toyko (never seen on DVD) and draw a line in the sand--this is the BEST Vinnie performance hands down captured visually.
Yes, the BRII tape is brilliant, but not in a musical context like with Chick and John.

Hey where'd you pick that up? Audiophile? Sorry if this has been asked/answered previously...
I've been listening to the CD for a few years now...DAMN!
I would have to say that I also like Warren Cuccurullo's "Thanks to Frank" for some very raw Vinnie...I love his gritty, edgy, and powerful drumming on it. Real easy to get a mental picture of him going to town in the studio...

Yeah, I like "Thanks to Frank", as well. It's a great glimpse of Vinnie, as he gets off the plane at the last minute, only has like a day to cut all the songs, takes a quick listen to the demos, gets a picture of what he wants to do, and they press record, and he lets it rip. I dont have those CD liner notes anymore, but I remember that was the gist of how that date went down.

I remember telling Vinnie how ridiculous the Blue Note Tokyo performance was one time, and he shuddered in disgust, saying, "Man, they decided to record the WORST night of that entire week!" And you can hear (and see) some kind of "funky" moments, which, of course, wind up being some of my favorites--just very raw and fresh!
But, to think of what the BEST night(s) of the week might've sounded like is REALLY scary to me!

Vinnie had never actually seen this video footage until a few months ago. He knew it was out there but never had a copy!

THANKS 2 FRANK is always a favorite subject of mine. I bought T2F right when it came out after watching the Buddy Rich Memorial chops fest; in the last 9 years I've listened to it hundreds of times. In a magazine article Warren Cuccurullo said he could only get Vinnie for two days: Saturday, 8-20-94, and Sunday, 8-28-94. WC said Vinnie worked with him and Pino Palladino one day; and with him and Nick Beggs, bassist of Kaja Goo Goo, on the other day. Both sessions lasted 16 hours according to Cuccurullo and he used 5 tunes from each day. The liner notes claim seven of the ten tracks Vinnie drums on are first takes! "The Canarsie Daiquiri" is a second take, I love the blistering outro. "Ass Man" and "The Galactic Ballerina" are third takes. These are some of Vinnie's more demented recorded moments. Modern Drummer said they bet Vinnie was licking his chops waiting to dig into Cuccurullo's nasty riffs.
The Blue Note Tokyo gig is wicked in a different way but it breathes the same rareified air as T2F. He played some truly rampaging drums with Chick as well as Warren.
And don't forget the Blue Note NYC bootleg CD whereon Vinnie rips it up even more than while in Tokyo with Mssrs. Corea and Patitucci, plus a small horn section.
